Community and co-op
Surpl is being built as a community-led energy platform for people who want a fairer, more local way to participate in Ireland’s clean energy transition. The long-term goal is to support households, local groups, and community projects with a structure that can eventually grow into a proper co-operative model.
At the moment, the co-op is coming soon. Surpl is laying the groundwork first so the platform, the community, and the legal structure can all grow in a sensible order.
Why this matters
Energy should not feel distant, opaque, or controlled only by large institutions. Surpl exists because local people should have a real way to organise renewable value, build community ownership, and take part in the system in a more meaningful way.
That is especially important for community solar, local renewable projects, and the kind of energy participation that can support savings, education, and a more just transition.
Our community story
Surpl is designed to grow from the ground up. That means working with real communities, local branches, and trusted groups such as sports clubs, energy communities, and household networks that want to participate together rather than alone.
The platform is being built to support that kind of local identity and local ownership, because community energy works best when people can see themselves in the project.
Co-op coming soon
The co-op structure is an important part of the long-term vision, but it is being introduced carefully. Surpl is first building the software, member experience, and partner structure so that the co-op can launch with purpose rather than as a vague idea.
Once ready, the co-op will help formalise member participation and strengthen the community-led nature of the platform. It is part of the path toward a more participatory, more locally owned energy future.
Founding members
If you would like to be one of our founding members, or if you want any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Founding members will be part of the early group helping shape the community story, the platform direction, and the longer-term co-op identity. That matters because a strong founding group gives the project credibility, momentum, and a clearer public voice.
What the co-op stands for
The co-op is being shaped around a few clear ideas:
- Community ownership.
- Local participation.
- Renewable energy for real people.
- Transparent value and fair benefit.
- A practical route to future energy sharing.
These principles are not separate from the platform. They are the reason the platform exists.
A shared future
Surpl wants to help create a space where members feel they are not just users, but contributors to something bigger. That includes pooled GO credits, community solar projects, and future participation in more advanced energy models when those are properly implemented.
The co-op is how that bigger idea becomes more durable, more democratic, and more rooted in the communities it serves.
