About Surpl
Surpl is a community energy platform built in Ireland to help households, branches, and local energy projects understand, organise, and unlock more value from renewable generation.
The platform is being built in stages. Today, Surpl focuses on secure member experiences, branch-based community structure, device-linked data flows where available, and public-facing transparency. Over time, Surpl is designed to support smarter renewable value workflows, including future GO-related features, flexibility tools, and other community energy services where the legal and market frameworks allow.
Why Surpl exists
Ireland has a growing base of rooftop solar, community energy, and local renewable interest, but much of the value is still hard to see, hard to organise, or hard to share fairly.
Surpl exists to help bridge that gap by giving members a better way to track renewable generation, understand local energy value, and participate in community-led energy structures through a clearer digital platform.
The idea is simple: if people are already producing clean energy, they should have better tools to understand that value locally and transparently.
What Surpl does now
Surpl is currently focused on the parts of the platform that can work today.
Live / in progress
Live / in progress- Member onboarding and account foundations.
- Community branch structure and branch administration.
- Device-linked data flows where supported.
- Inverter API integrations.
- Secure consent, privacy, and cookie controls.
- Customer-facing legal and transparency pages.
- Public branch and community storytelling.
- Internal reporting and product development for future energy services.
These are the foundations of the platform. They are designed to create a trustworthy and useful member experience while Surpl continues to grow.
What Surpl is building next
Surpl is being developed to support a wider set of community energy tools over time.
In progress
In progress- Better branch-level dashboards and reporting.
- More detailed member insights.
- Deeper partner and installer workflows.
- Improved reporting for community groups and business users.
- Broader device integration support where available.
- Flexibility-ready product design.
These features are being built carefully so the platform can scale without losing clarity, trust, or control.
Waiting on regulation or market readiness
Regulatory dependentSome of the most important long-term features depend on Irish regulatory decisions, partner readiness, or market implementation details.
Waiting on regulatory change
Waiting on regulation- Smart-meter API access through the SMDAC implementation process.
- Branch-level GO pooling and live GO settlement workflows.
- Peer-to-peer energy trading.
- Broader local energy sharing or settlement models.
- Any future certificate or market features that require a formal legal framework.
These features are part of the long-term vision, but they are not presented as live unless and until the relevant framework is in place.
Our approach
Surpl is being built with a practical rollout in mind.
That means the current product focuses on what can work now, while future features are kept ready for when the regulatory and market environment is fully in place.
The model is intentionally partner-friendly. Surpl handles the platform, the member experience, and the digital workflow, while licensed or qualified entities can hold the legal account where required.
Community first
Surpl is designed to be rooted in communities, not just transactions.
That means working with local groups, clubs, and community energy projects where renewable generation can be tied to a real place, a real group, and a real story.
That community focus matters because energy is not only about electricity. It is also about participation, trust, fairness, and helping people feel that they are part of the transition rather than just paying for it.
Data integrity
Surpl is being built around high-integrity data from the start.
That includes direct inverter API connections, secure platform workflows, and smart-meter alignment where available, rather than relying on manual uploads or unverifiable claims.
This approach is important because the platform needs to be trustworthy for members, useful for partners, and credible for future regulatory and market rollout.
Why branches matter
Branches help turn a broad community energy idea into something local and understandable.
A branch can represent a neighbourhood, a community solar project, a sports club, a local group, or another organised energy community.
Branches make it easier for people to see how their local group is performing, how much renewable energy is being produced, and how community participation grows over time.
Where public branch data is shown, it is designed to be anonymised and aggregated so that individual household activity is not exposed.
Our mission
The mission of Surpl is to help Irish households and communities get more value from renewable energy, while building the platform foundation for the energy services that should exist next.
That includes helping people understand where their renewable value goes, how it can be organised locally, and how community-led energy systems can grow in a way that is practical, fair, and future-ready.
Looking ahead
Surpl is starting with community structure, verified energy data, and platform tools that can work now.
The wider vision includes:
- Branch-level renewable value workflows.
- Flexibility services.
- EV smart charging.
- Smarter automation for member participation.
- Broader energy community tooling.
- Peer-to-peer energy trading, once the regulatory framework allows it.
These are future stages, not the starting point. Surpl is being built to grow in stages, with each stage adding more value without losing clarity or trust.
Our values
Surpl is shaped around a few simple principles:
- Community ownership and participation.
- Honest, data-backed energy value.
- Professional but warm communication.
- Practical rollout, not hype.
- Future-ready design with real-world constraints in mind.
These values reflect both the platform’s purpose and the way it is being communicated publicly.
What makes Surpl different
Surpl is not trying to be a generic solar dashboard or a traditional supplier.
It is being built as a community energy operating layer that can connect people, data, and renewable value in a way that is more local, more transparent, and more useful.
That is what makes it more than just software. It is infrastructure for a new kind of energy participation model in Ireland.
