Surpl launches live tariff intelligence for Ireland

Compare Irish electricity tariffs in one clear view today, then unlock smarter personalised plan recommendations once smart meter data is enabled for registered members.

By Cillian

Ireland’s electricity market is full of choice, but comparing tariffs has never been simple. Suppliers present their plans in different formats, on different pages, with different labels, billing structures, and terms. Surpl was built to make that complexity easier to understand, and today we’re taking a major step forward.

We’ve launched a live tariff intelligence layer that brings together electricity plans from across Ireland, normalises them into a consistent format, and presents them in a way that is easier to compare, understand, and act on. For the first time, Surpl can help users see tariff data in one place with clearer plan naming, better comparability, and transparent freshness indicators based on the latest source checks.

A better way to compare tariffs

Energy pricing is not one-size-fits-all. Some plans are flat-rate 24-hour tariffs, while others use day, night, and peak periods. Some suppliers publish inclusive rates, some publish exclusive rates, and some split charges across multiple pages or PDFs. Surpl’s job is to turn those mixed formats into fair, comparable data so households can make more informed decisions.

That matters because a tariff that looks cheap at first glance is not always the cheapest plan for your home. Standing charges, time-of-use windows, export rates, and special conditions can all change the real cost of electricity over a year. Our platform is designed to surface those differences clearly instead of hiding them in the fine print.

What we’ve built

Surpl now has a dedicated tariff ingestion engine that discovers supplier tariff pages, classifies page types, extracts plan data, normalises pricing formats, validates the result, and only publishes tariffs when the data is clean enough to trust. We’ve also added supplier-specific parsers for the more difficult sources so that the platform can handle both simple tables and more complex pages or PDFs.

That means Surpl can now publish cleaner, more comparable tariff data for Irish households across a growing list of suppliers. It also means our public tariff finder and member dashboard are driven by a consistent data layer rather than a patchwork of manually formatted prices.

Why this matters now

Smart meters have already changed the Irish energy landscape. According to ESB Networks and CRU, more than two million smart meters have been installed across Ireland, giving customers better visibility into when and how they use electricity.

That shift matters because it creates a new opportunity: instead of comparing tariffs using broad assumptions, we can compare them against a household’s actual usage patterns. That is where Surpl becomes much more valuable for registered members.

What registered members get next

Today, Surpl helps members compare live tariff data in a clearer and more transparent way. The next step is even more powerful: once smart meter data access is enabled, Surpl will be able to use real household usage patterns to suggest the best plans for that specific home.

That opens the door to features such as:

• usage-aware tariff recommendations,

• more accurate annual savings estimates,

• better matching between tariff type and household behaviour,

• EV charging recommendations based on actual usage,

• hot water and appliance scheduling suggestions,

• and smarter solar self-consumption decisions.

In practical terms, that means a member will be able to ask: “Which tariff is actually best for my home?” not just “Which tariff is cheapest on paper?” That is a much more useful answer, and one that gets better as the platform sees more of your energy profile.

Why smart meter data changes everything

Smart meter services are designed to give customers better access to electricity usage information and support more informed choices about tariffs and energy use. CRU and ESB both highlight the value of smart meters for understanding consumption, reducing estimated bills, and helping households move toward smarter, more efficient energy use.

For Surpl, this means we can eventually build a home energy intelligence layer that goes beyond price comparison. We will be able to help members understand how their energy use lines up with tariff windows, solar production, EV charging, and flexible loads. That is the foundation for a much smarter household energy experience.

What comes after tariff comparison

Surpl is being built as one connected energy platform, not a collection of separate tools. Tariffs are the first layer. Smart meter data will make the next layer far more personal. From there, we can build toward household orchestration across EV charging, water heating, solar, batteries, and eventually grid flexibility signals.

Once smart meter integration is enabled, registered members will be able to benefit from:

• personalised tariff matching based on real usage,

• recommendations that adapt over time,

• clearer visibility into where savings are actually possible,

• and a more complete picture of home energy performance.

Built for trust

Energy advice has to be accurate. That is why Surpl includes freshness indicators, source transparency, and clear coverage notices where supplier data cannot yet be pulled automatically. We want the product to feel trustworthy, not overconfident.

We also believe it is important to be transparent about what the platform can and cannot do today. Some suppliers publish data in formats that are harder to automate, and we are honest about those limitations rather than forcing unreliable results into the product.

The road ahead

The current launch is a big milestone, but it is only the beginning. The real value of Surpl will come when we can combine tariff intelligence with smart meter data and build a more personalised system for members. That will let us move from “compare plans” to “optimise your home energy decisions.”

We believe that is the future of home energy: one constant, intelligent platform that helps households make better decisions without having to become energy experts themselves.
